Standards

ASHRAE is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and follows ANSI’s requirements for due process and standards development.

ASHRAE writes standards for both its members and other professionals concerned with refrigeration processes and the design and maintenance of indoor environments.

Consensus standards are developed and published to define minimum values or acceptable performance. ASHRAE publishes the following three types of voluntary consensus standards: Method of Measurement or Test, Standard Design and Standard Practice.

The ASHRAE Handbook is a four-volume resource for the HVAC&R technology and is available in both print and electronic versions. The volumes are fundamentals, HVAC Applications, HVAC Systems and Equipment, and Refrigeration. Some volumes are available at the library or in our office for consultation (B-Annex, Room 203).

The ASHRAE standards are often referenced in building codes, and are considered useful standards for consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, architects, and government agencies.
